IUD-Chapter 23: Why is the Gap So Wide?

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

When Fang Li rushed out of the alley and returned to the street, the scene before him had completely changed.

The fiery red color was expanding.

The dense black smoke filled the air.

The crude houses were collapsing.

Roars and screams mixed together.

At that moment, the safe haven known as Aragane Station had suddenly turned into a sea of fire, causing every house to burn and gradually head towards destruction.

“It’s like hell…” Fang Li couldn’t help but mutter these words as he looked at the scene before his eyes.

After all, on the street, lifeless corpses were lying on every corner, oozing a large amount of blood from their half-eaten flesh, making it a chilling scene for anyone.

If this scene wasn’t hell, then what else could it be?

At this moment, even without activating the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, Fang Li could understand it. The surroundings were filled with one thing and one thing only and this was precisely the concept that Fang Li was most familiar with— ‘Death’.

It was exactly the same.

“Aragane Station is no more…” Saying this, Fang Li looked at the lifeless corpses on the ground without any change in his expression.

However, not long after, Fang Li’s gaze toward those corpses changed.

“Uh… Ahh—!”

In the unpleasant groans resembling a baby’s cry, one of the corpses on the ground suddenly started moving.

Like a puppet manipulated by an invisible thread, the corpse crawled up from the ground, swaying unsteadily before standing up, letting out a hideous roar from its throat.

This corpse not only had its entire skin turned gray, but its pupils had vanished, leaving only the whites of its eyes.

The most striking feature was naturally the chest cavity of this corpse.

Because inside it, a heart gradually emitted a glow.

“So, this is the Kabanerization?” Fang Li couldn’t help but exclaim in his heart as he saw this scene.

Generally, humans attacked by Kabane would mostly die due to massive bleeding.

But after a certain period of feigned death, the hearts of these deceased individuals would start glowing and they would resurrect, turning into Kabane and into the creatures that are devoid of reason and those who only attacked humans.

Even if someone bitten by a Kabane managed to survive, they would eventually die suddenly after a period of time and resurrect as a Kabane.

This was known as the Kabane’s Hiding Phase, which varied in duration due to individual differences but never exceeded three days.

Now, Fang Li was witnessing this scene. The scene of people dying and turning into Kabane.

“So they are not even allowed to die?” Fang Li tightened the dagger in his hand as he said this and his eyes glimmered with an icy blue light.

However, before Fang Li could take action, someone else acted first.

“Bang—!”

With a resounding gunshot, the chest cavity of the Kabane in the midst of its transformation was struck by an unseen force, causing it to burst open in a dazzling shower of sparks.

“Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!”

In the following moment, a series of disorderly gunshots echoed, relentlessly pummeling the tormented Kabane’s chest cavity.

“Boom!”

With the final gunshot, the protective barrier around the heart shattered, leading to the direct crushing of Kabane’s heart. As the monstrous creature lost its luster, it collapsed onto the ground, reverting back to a lifeless corpse.

Fang Li was momentarily startled, then immediately understood what had happened. He turned his head and looked towards the rooftop of a nearby building.

There, Mumei held two Steam Pistols and somewhat discontentedly said to Fang Li, “What are you doing there? Hurry up and come with me!”

After saying this, Mumei didn’t even wait for Fang Li to reply and started running, leaping, and moving across the rooftops like an agile cat.

Seeing this, Fang Li couldn’t help but smile wryly.

“She truly is an unpredictable cat.” Though he said that, Fang Li still followed behind her.

The surrounding buildings were slowly collapsing under the flames. Naturally, there were no longer any living people on the street, only corpses lying on the ground. Of course, in addition to the motionless corpses, there were also corpses that could move.

“Aaah, Aa

Ahhhh—!”

Amidst the monotonous howls, the Kabane attacked Fang Li one after another, in a terrifying manner.

However, this time, Fang Li didn’t stop his steps anymore. He ran forward as if the Kabane were nothing, completely ignoring them.

After all, those Kabane didn’t need Fang Li to deal with them.

“Bang, bang, bang, bang—!”

While the Kabane charged toward Fang Li one by one, the sounds of gunshots echoed in the surrounding.

Once these gunshots rang out, the Kabane rushing towards Fang Li would be struck as if by invisible bullets and collapsed instantly. In no time, they would be replenished one after another, and their hearts would be shattered one after another, dying in a way that was beyond death.

From Fang Li’s perspective, while Mumei agilely jumped and moved on the rooftops like a ninja, she didn’t even look in this direction. However, every time she shot, she accurately and effortlessly killed the Kabane on the road. As a result, wherever Fang Li passed, there was no longer any threat.

“No pain, no gain but why is the difference between us so huge?”

For Fang Li, killing a Kabane wasn’t a difficult task.

The behavior of the Kabane was too simple. They would mostly charge straight forward to attack. As long as one had the means to break through their heart’s skin membrane, even an ordinary person would be able to strike and kill a Kabane. Not to mention, Fang Li had also become quite skilled in various killing techniques.

However, when the number of Kabane increased, even Fang Li had no way to deal with them. He could only either escape or find a clever solution.

But Mumei didn’t need any clever solutions.

With two Steam Pistols in her hands and shooting skills so precise that they were astonishing, killing Kabane was too easy for her.

If one wanted to surround Mumei with numbers, it would probably be impossible without several hundred Kabane. As for Fang Li, as long as a dozen or twenty Kabane surrounded him, it would basically be Game Over for him.

“Truly…” Fang Li didn’t finish his sentence.

Because Fang Li knew that it was still a secret.

Looking at Mumei’s figure, which was getting faster and faster, Fang Li took a deep breath and quickened his pace to catch up.

There was a distance from the direction of the city gate, and it could even be said to be in the opposite direction, where a garage was located.

Inside the garage, an Hayajiro Train with a gleaming, icy luster was parked there, silently waiting to be activated.

When Fang Li and Mumei arrived there, there were already quite a few people gathered there.
