Trafalgar Law’s early life was a tragic one. He was born in a country known to the world as “White City Town”: Flevance.
This country had formed a peculiar landscape of pristine white trees and ground due to the underground “Amber Lead” mineral, which was also a superior raw material.
Because the World Government concealed the truth about the Amber Lead mines, all the residents of Flevance contracted severe illnesses, leading to outbreaks of war at worst.
His father, mother, and younger sister all perished in the war, and he himself was afflicted with “Amber Lead Disease,” with only three years to live.
Like Teach, upon realizing his days were numbered, Law began to seek revenge on society.
He strapped explosives to himself and found Doflamingo, who was then a young man. With the lofty goal of seeking revenge on society, Law joined the Donquixote pirate crew.
The story could have ended here, with Law dying a painful death from illness three years later. But Law met a man who would change his life forever.
Donquixote Rosinante, also known as “Corazon,” and symbolizes the highest-ranking member of the Hearts Army, “Hearts.”
Disguising himself as someone a bit scatterbrained and disdainful of children, he kept these people away from the “root of sin,” Doflamingo, to prevent wickedness from spreading, being kind-hearted and responsible.
At the same time, Corazon was also the adopted son of Marine Fleet Admiral Sengoku, a spy planted by the Marines beside Doflamingo.
Initially, Law even considered assassinating Corazon, but after his failure, he not only went unpunished but also had the incident concealed by Corazon. Two years later, Law, gradually opening up under Corazon’s guidance, sought out physicians who could cure Amber Lead Disease.
But the good times didn’t last long because, suspected of being a spy by Doflamingo, Corazon was ordered to purchase the newly emerged Operation-Operation Fruit, ostensibly to treat Law after consuming it, but in reality to set him up for the Perennial Youth Operation in the future, putting him in mortal danger.
However, Doflamingo never anticipated that Corazon was already a user of the Calm-Calm Fruit ability, so even if he obtained the Operation-Operation Fruit, he couldn’t consume it.
After reporting this to Sengoku, Corazon took Law to the meeting place.
But on the eve of the transaction, Law’s condition worsened and urgently needed treatment. After crossing the tempest to reach Minion Island, Corazon took drastic measures, attacking the pirate crew belonging to Diez Barrels and seizing the Operation-Operation Fruit to be consumed by Law, halting the disease’s progression.
However, Corazon himself was shot by enemy gunfire during the counterattack and was powerless to move.
So, Corazon entrusted Law with the key information that could save Dressrosa and delivered it to a specific Marine.
But unexpectedly, that specific Marine turned out to be Vergo, the first-generation member of the Hearts Army and a spy sent by Doflamingo to the Marines!
In a critical moment, Corazon hid Law in a chest, using his own Calm-Calm Fruit ability to prevent others from noticing anything unusual, while he himself was shot dead by Doflamingo.
Thus, Doflamingo achieved the feat of [fratricide and patricide]!
In his final moments, Corazon struggled to keep himself from passing out, trying to maintain Law’s abilities for a while longer so he wouldn’t be discovered by Doflamingo.
In the end, Corazon died on Minion Island, and Law gained his freedom from Doflamingo.
For Law, the man who had shown him such immense kindness had died like this, which was a huge blow, and his hatred for Doflamingo reached its peak.
“Later, I found my comrades in the North Blue and was planning to set sail next year for revenge against Doflamingo…”
Law spoke calmly as if he were not talking about his own affairs, slowly recounting. At this point, he paused, and finally, his expression became lively.
“But he was defeated by Vice Admiral Soryu (Azure Dragon) and the Donquixote Family was disbanded.”
Fujitora and Jinbe remained silent at this. The latter thought of his hometown, Fish-Man Island, from Flevance. If it weren’t for Whitebeard’s protection, it might have been the next Flevance.
Fujitora, on the other hand, felt some sympathy for Law, given the oppression he had suffered, and also some admiration.
In darkness but aspiring for light!
The previous Law allowed Doflamingo to see the hatred of his childhood self, and now Law allowed Fujitora to see his own younger self, who had been constantly lost between black and white.
Seeing Law struggle to stand up from the heavy chains of fate touched Rowen deeply.
Rowen silently puffed on his cigar, exhaling a smoke ring as he spoke lightly, “As a Marine, I have no authority to judge the actions of the government. As long as you do not pose a threat to government rule, I will not consider you an enemy!”
Fujitora’s expression stiffened.
Yes, now was not the time for them to overturn the table with the government. Law’s hatred for the government would definitely not be less than his hatred for Doflamingo, posing a regrettable potential threat.
However, to Fujitora’s surprise, Law didn’t seem to be discontented with Rowen’s statement. Perhaps it was Corazon who showed him that there are indeed Marines fighting for Justice, so he didn’t direct his anger at the entire government system.
After a moment of silence, Law raised his head.
“I understand.”
“I spent half a year sailing to the Grand Line, not to throw away my life.”
“But…”
Shuā!
Law stood up, overturning his chair, then grasped the famed blade “Kikoku” with one hand, holding it upright and kneeling down.
“Vice Admiral Soryu (Azure Dragon), thank you for avenging Cora San!”
“I, Trafalgar D. Water Law, will never forget what you have done!!”
To show his sincerity, Law even revealed his alias and hidden name.
Seeing Law kneeling on the ground, Jinbe was shocked, unable to believe why Law would make such a grand gesture towards Rowen.
After all… besides defeating Doflamingo, Rowen also slew almost all of the Donquixote household’s executives, among whom were Law’s childhood companions.
If you really counted, Rowen owed both gratitude and revenge to Law.
Fujitora, however, had anticipated this. He knew that if he were in Law’s shoes, he would do the same.
Those people had already parted ways with Law since they decided to follow Doflamingo. For Fujitora, cutting the bonds of the past and emotions in his heart for the sake of Justice was something he would never do.
So neither would Law.
This gratitude was genuine.
“So, this is the reason you wanted to find me, to express your thanks in person?” Rowen asked.
“Yes!”
“Well, I see…”
After thinking for a moment, Rowen suddenly turned to Fujitora and asked, “Do you have a Den Den Mushi with recording capabilities here?”
“There’s one under the desk… Uh, what do you want to do?” Fujitora’s eyelids twitched suddenly, sensing an ominous premonition.
“I’m thinking, if just owing gratitude to Corazon made Law come all the way to the Grand Line to thank me in person… then Fleet Admiral Sengoku, as Corazon’s foster father, seems to have never expressed his gratitude to me!”
Rowen took out the Den Den Mushi and clicked it open, snapping dozens of pictures of Law kneeling on the ground, looking up with a bewildered expression!
Satisfied, he then tucked the Den Den Mushi into his pocket.
“I’ll go to the port later and have the soldiers there send these photos back. I refuse to believe that Sengoku has no affection for Corazon!!”
Fujitora: “…”
Law: “…”
“So, this is blackmail… right?” Jinbe’s mouth hung open in disbelief, blurting out unconsciously.
Then he quickly came to his senses, under Rowen’s scrutiny, maintaining his composure, lifted the teacup and took a sip.
Well, even if it’s blackmail, it’s none of my business, right?!
