Due to the unique nature of the Minks, when granting them power, Arceus usually bases it on their specific Mink species. This rule applies even if the two of them are Zeraora’s children.
The ability given to Meowna was Sprigatito, the Starter Pokémon from the Paldea Region.
As Arceus explained, because they are young and already possess numerous innate powers, directly granting them the final evolutionary form could overwhelm their bodies. Starting from the initial stage allows them to gradually adapt to their new ability, letting the powers integrate naturally over time.
The Meadow Plate’s power would have sufficed on its own. The Dread Plate was only used to modify their bodies, ensuring they could adapt to subsequent powers—such as the final evolution form of Sprigatito, Meowscarada.
Even the senior officers’ powers had undergone refinement by Arceus later on. Granting such abilities early would simply ease their journey. As his grandchildren, Meowna and Wolff enjoyed a bit of Arceus’ favoritism.
But when Wolff’s turn came to receive his ability, he asked for a pause. He then led Arceus a short distance away from the group.
“Lord Arceus, is this okay?”
“Give me a reason.”
“Because Meowna is a cat Mink. Her ability should be related to cats, right? If that’s the case, I think it’d be better if mine was a cat too.”
“Anything else?”
“Well… I’m a wolf Mink, and wolves are canines. Meowna and I used to argue a lot, and she’d always claim I didn’t understand cats at all. If my ability is also cat-related, I’d understand both cats and wolves better. That way, I could understand her better.
And if Mom and Dad ever argue in the future, I could mediate.”
“Hm? Have your parents ever argued?”
“No, but I’ve heard some parents can get pretty heated when they argue. I don’t want to see that happen….”
“You’re thinking quite far ahead. One last question—why not let Meowna try to understand you instead?”
“Because…I’m the older brother. If it’s a different species, it might hurt a lot, right? Meowna’s scared of pain, so let me handle it. It’s my job to protect her.”
“You really are a good older brother. Don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt at all. The reason why Minks’ modified ability is of similar species is because this way they don’t need to change their fighting style and can quickly master it.”
Since you’re young, this isn’t an issue for you. Since this is what you want, I’ll grant your wish.”
Initially, the plan was to choose an ability for him from canine Pokémon. However, Wolff’s request changed things slightly.
He didn’t take back the Dread Plate, but replaced the Meadow Plate with the Flame Plate. Since it was also a cat Pokémon, the Dread Plate can pave the way for his future. As for Wolff’s ability, it came from the Alola region’s Starter Pokémon – Litten.
…
After receiving their abilities, Meowna and Wolff expressed their gratitude and left, visibly excited. Meowna had mixed feelings about Wolff’s choice, but it wasn’t long before the two were bickering as usual.
To her surprise, Wolff now seemed to understand her thoughts better. This was exactly why he’d wanted a cat-type Pokémon. By interpreting body language and subtle expressions, he could better grasp a cat Mink’s thoughts.
Only Setsuna found the situation a little odd. Wolff’s essence remained that of a wolf Mink, yet his transformation made it feel like the family had gained another cat. On the bright side, the cat teaser toys she’d prepared now can be used more.
“Zeraora, don’t you think they’ve been getting along better since Lord Arceus gave them their abilities?”
Siblings quarreling is quite common. It’s rare for kids their age to hold grudges, but when they quarrel, it’s still a hassle. This was definitely a good thing for Setsuna.
“Isn’t that a good thing?”
“It is good, but that Wolff—what’s so bad about being a wolf?”
“That’s right, wolves are the best.”
While the two were sharing this sweet moment, Meowna and Wolff were busy mastering their abilities. Unlike other Zoan Users, who typically start by becoming familiar with their Human-Beast form, the two of them were freely running in their Beast forms.
At the front was a black-furred cat with red markings and whiskers on its face—the Fire Cat Pokémon, Litten. Though it resembled a tiger more than a cat, for now, Wolff was undoubtedly a cat, even stopping occasionally to lick his fur.
This was one of Litten’s traits. Its fur was rich in oils, which served as fuel for the fire it spewed. After Wolff obtained this ability, they don’t need to collect firewood when camping outdoors. Just use a lint roller on Wolff’s body a few times.
This unique fur is quite resistant to burning, making it a must-have for traveling. Even if there is not enough fur, it is also very effective for starting a fire.
Following closely behind was a light-green cat. Its face bore deep green patterns resembling four overlapping leaves, and its chest was adorned with green fur resembling a shirt’s collar.
The Grass Cat Pokémon – Sprigatito. Meowna was also grooming her fur, but her fur can’t be used in the same way. As a Grass-type Pokémon, her fur has similarities to plants, able to obtain energy through photosynthesis, and also able to emit a charming natural fragrance.
…
The siblings’ birthday was near the end of the year, so 1518 was just around the corner. Zunesha was also nearing Wano Country, planning to take a vacation here and stay for a few days.
“Unfortunately, things are piling up. I’ll soon need to get ready to return to work. When will someone with more prestige than me finally show up to take over the throne?”
“That won’t be easy, but it shouldn’t take too long. Anyway, you don’t have anything else to do, so just treat it like clocking in…”
Before Zeraora could finish speaking, Setsuna’s Den Den Mushi suddenly rang.
“Hm? What’s the matter, Senior Hitsugisukan? Is there an emergency?”
Since taking over Zou Island, Setsuna hadn’t encountered any major issues. The assistants prepared by Hitsugisukan handled everything smoothly. Even during her vacation, Hitsugisukan had never disturbed her.
“It seems there’s been an incident. Pekoms just called—Pedro and Zepo ran into an issue in Big Mom’s territory. It seems to be related to some red stone. Pekoms said their lives might be at risk. He’s stalling for time, but he doesn’t know how long he can hold out. He’s hoping you can get there as soon as possible to save them.”
After hanging up, Setsuna looked at Zeraora.
“I understand. Give me a moment; I’ll first go find Lord Arceus.”
Since it involved Big Mom Pirates, the Beasts Pirates weren’t afraid of them. However, as subordinates, the officers didn’t have the authority to start a conflict on their own.
As soon as Zeraora finished explaining the situation, Arceus recalled some details and immediately made another call to Kaido.
“Hey, why are you calling me? Is there any new development?”
“Something like that. There’s been an issue with the Minks. Long story short, Big Mom has a Red Poneglyph, and I want to exchange the text on the one in Wano Country for the text inscribed on hers. Do you have any objections?”
